Winter and Spring Challenges for Tree Work
When winter grips Northwest Connecticut, it doesn’t do so gently. At KDF Tree, we work outdoors year-round, and the combination of extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and now an approaching warming trend can present real winter and spring challenges for tree work.
This winter has delivered prolonged periods of extremely low temperatures across Torrington and surrounding towns. When the thermometer drops well below freezing, everything changes. Hydraulic equipment operates more slowly. Safety gear stiffens. Even climbing lines and rigging ropes become less flexible. Most importantly, frozen ground can be both a blessing and a challenge — while it can support heavy equipment better than soft soil, icy surfaces create hazards for our crews working aloft and on the ground.
Then comes the snow.
Significant Snow Accumulation This Season
Significant snow accumulation adds weight to tree canopies, stressing already weakened limbs. We’ve responded to numerous calls involving cracked branches, split trunks, and storm-related damage. Snow-covered yards also make it difficult to locate landscaping features, septic systems, irrigation lines, and decorative stonework — all things we carefully protect during our work. Safety and property protection remain our top priorities, even when conditions are less than ideal.
Warming Trends
Now, as we approach the early spring warming trend, a new set of obstacles emerges. Melting snow combined with saturated ground creates muddy, unstable conditions. Heavy equipment can leave ruts. Bucket trucks may not be able to safely access certain areas. Even foot traffic around trees can damage lawns that are just beginning to thaw. In some cases, we may need to postpone non-emergency work to prevent unnecessary property damage.
